是的你沒看錯!鼎鼎大名的美國柏克萊大學〈UC Berkeley〉即將開辦課程,研究星、海、爭、霸!

Course Description:
UC Berkeley students with an interest in real-time strategy games and the competitive gaming landscape are encouraged to participate in this class. 〈對星海爭霸這個策略競賽遊戲有興趣的UC Berkeley學生歡迎報名此課程〉

This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game Starcraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted. Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced Starcraft theory. 〈本課將會深入探討在星海爭霸的遊戲中戰爭是如何發生的,從純理論到較為計算的角度,各層面研究遊戲內容,以了解戰爭的發生過程。對微積分與微分方程有深入了解尤佳。此外,透過分析遊戲內容與觀看replay,本課能將理論帶入實務,使學生更了解決策技巧與進階Starcraft理論〉

Class will start with lecture and usually include a special discussion topic having to do with the day’s lecture to inspire new and original thought. At the end of lecture, there may be time to analyze student-submitted replays to illustrate a point or to improve analysis. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class and is due at the beginning of each lecture. 〈課程開始時會先講課,接著進行一段討論,以激發新想法。課程快結束時若有時間,可能會針對學生上傳的replay進行分析,藉以說明概念或幫助分析。每堂課後會有作業,下次講課前交。〉

Course Learning Objectives and Goals:
What may look like complex topics are just ways we want you to think more deeply about the game to derive a greater satisfaction from playing. Furthermore, this understanding should have applications in real life, to further synthesize new information from limited inferences. The primary goal is for students to learn, enjoy the art of competitive StarCraft, and have fun. Overall, students will be applying critical thinking, quick decision-making, and game theory skills throughout the sessions. Students will also learn what to look for in a replay or game to learn most effectively. 〈課程主題若看來複雜,是希望你們對遊戲內容思考得更為深入,從遊戲中得到更大的滿足感。此外,對遊戲的了解應能應用在真實人生,學習如何從有限的推斷中歸結出新的資訊。本課的主要內容是讓學生學習、享受星海爭霸的競爭藝術,並享受遊戲的快感。總結來說,學生從課程中學到批判性思考、快速決策、以及星海爭霸的遊戲技巧。學生也會學到如何更有效的抓度replay的觀看重點。〉

  • A commentator once said: “Yellow seems to be in a safe position, the Terran only has one medic, and Yellow has two sunken colonies. When the Terran has the same number of medics as sunks, that’s when the Zerg is in trouble.” As we all know, medics have no attack. Why does the number of Medics matter for a sunk break? When does it not matter?
  • You started with a mass Hydra strat, which the enemy Protoss scouts and ends up with a mass of zealots with leg enhancements. How effective are your Hydralisks against this incoming horde? If your Hydralisks are not effective, how can you make your Hydralisks more effective?
  • Find out how much damage a Siege Tank (in Seige Mode) does to a Zergling and Hydralisk and determine how many more shots or less shots it would take to kill each with Seige Tank upgrades or Zerg Carapace upgrades.
  • A Terran Siege Tank in Siege Mode attacks for 70 damage, has 150 hp, and 1 armor. This means that after two upgrades, a Siege Tank can kill another Siege Tank in two hits instead of three. What are other significant damage combos? Be sure to investigate not just upgrades and numbers of hits, but also unit group combinations. Which numbers are worth noting?
  • When engaging a sunken colony defense with marines/medics, what is the optimal unit positioning when sending to attack? (consider unit formation and which units should be sent in ahead of others)
